There is a thin lining around many of your internal organs called the Mesotheliolium. The Mesotheliolium is a group of cells that basically help your important organs like your heart and lungs to ‘juggle’ about smoothly and safely as your body moves, like a protective layer. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer of these cells.
The three main areas where this the thin membrane, or mesotheliolium, are found are the chest (pleura), the abdomen (peritoneum) and the heart (pericardium). The most common place to find Mesothelioma is in the abdomen, and this is referred to as Pleural Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, and it only needs a tiny amount to result in the contraction of the disease.
The unusual thing about Mesothelioma (Meso for short) is that it can lay in a kind of ‘dormant’ state for many years. In fact decades can pass from the initial exposure to the patient even experiencing any symptoms whatsoever.
